Home Learning Task for Next Week- this will be stuck in your child's learning log after it is returned on Monday.
Counting Objects.
Look around there are so many things to be counted!
sausages on your plate, socks in your drawer, forks in the cutlery drawer, keys on Mum and Dad's Key chain. Coins in Mum's purse. chair legs around the table!
Outside there are cars in the street, people you walk past, dogs, birds, paving slabs,
trees etc.
The list goes on and on. This home learning can happen anywhere and at any time.
YOU JUST NEED TO PRACTISE COUNTING!!
We use a touch, move and count method in class (although this won't be easy if you are counting birds in the sky!) it just focuses the children on actually counting the objects instead of counting by rote (as a rhyme or song). Use mathematical language such as:
How many altogether?
Estimate/Guess how many we will count.
...one more makes?
...one less makes?
add one more.
one less equals.
the more the children are exposed to this language and its modelled the greater their understanding will be. You could write down numbers in their learning logs for the totals, or take a picture of them counting objects. Ask your child how they should record what they've done in their books.
