Mathematical Development.

Shape. Make a rainbowfish from 2D shapes. Describe the properties of the shapes. Ryan used a triangle, rectangle, a square and circle to make his Rainbow Fish. Neve favoured diamonds and squared with a rectangle tail. George enjoyed making a really long Rainbow Fish. Lily used as many shapes as she could find and talked about her reason for choosing so many...its all the shiny scales! Harry liked the layered approach too and told me all about his chosen shapes. Crid used standing up shapes to make her Rainbow Fish sculpture. Nathan made a wide Rainbow Fish because the Rainbow Fish is big! Look at all the different types of fish that have been made from 2D shapes! One way to help your child to learn all about shapes is to down load a shapes app on an iPad. If you search the App Store you'll find that there are many around that have matching games and recall activities for them to play.  Knowledge and Understanding of the World.  Set up the class fish tank in preparation of the fish. Place it in the Investigation area. Look into caring for fish. What do they need to live? Firstly we had to wash the tank. It was important not to use any soaps or cleaning products. Lots of us helped was it.                    We then added, stones, water and the pump. it needs to be set up for a week before the fish can be bought and placed in it. The children are very excited about this. We also thought about what a fish needs to stay healthy and happy. we wrote about it and illustrated our work. We thought that fish needed fish food, water, plants, a tank, rocks to stay healthy. We wrote independently, illustrated by ourselves too and cut out our own work. Lots of cross curricular work here.
