Chinese New Year

I think we have seen the last of the snow for now - thankfully. I hope you all had lots of fun playing in it.

Over the next two weeks all of our activities will be related to Chinese New Year. This year is the year of the snake. Activities include:

•               Listening to the Chinese New Year story

•               Sequencing the order the animals finished the race in 

•               Tracing Chinese symbols

•               Making stir-fry

•               Holding and using scissors correctly to cut out red envelopes

•               decorating the home corner like a traditional Chinese home

• trying Chinese snacks

• Matching sets of animals with the correct numeral

• Learning the names of the animals in Welsh by playing ‘Beth sy yn y bocs?’

Children will also be practising a dragon dance that they will perform for you on Friday 8th February @1.45pm in the school hall - more information to follow. 

There is a very famous, ancient banyan tree in Lam Tsuen in Hong Kong to which people travel at Chinese New Year and during other festivals to leave their own special wishes. First they write their wishes on colourful red wishing paper, then they tie them to oranges, and throw them up into the tree. If the wishes stick, it is thought that they will come true!

We would like to complete this activity with the children. To help us with this your child will be sent home with a tag to write a wish on. Please help your child with the writing 

but please let them think of their own wish - even if they wish for a new baby brother or sister!!! When the wish is written you attach the paper to the oranges using pins. 

Can you send the oranges in by Thursday 7th February so that we can throw them in the tree in the school grounds? Thanks.

We are all looking forward to our Chinese New Year celebrations and hope you can make it to our dragon dance. On the day of the dance children may come to school in bright coloured clothes - wearing brightly coloured clothes is another tradition associated with Chinese New Year.

The colour for our colour table next week is yellow.  Children may bring in a small yellow object or toy that is not breakable.
