Croeso nol!

Bore da everybody, welcome back. I hope you all had a lovely, well-deserved half term break. The weather was beautiful, which made it even better! Here are a few of the things that Noah and Charlie have enjoyed doing:

Well can you believe, we are moving into our final half term of the year. The time is flying by! It has definitely not been the year we had planned however we are all happy and healthy and that is the most important thing to remember at this time!

You have been working so hard at home, learnt many new skills and I am very proud of you.  You could not have done this without your Mums and Dads so huge well done to them too!

I will continue to upload new suggestions and activities on to our class blog page every Monday and as we said before half term, just do what you can and make it work for you.

Learning through play
'Play' is a very important part of children's learning and is essential for the growth in their cognitive, physical, social and emotional development. In the Foundation Phase, they have opportunities to explore and learn about the world around them, understand how things work, share ideas, ask questions and solve problems in practical situations.

It was great to catch up with lots of you before half term and hear about all the lovely things you have been doing and all the new skills you are developing.

Please continue to build your dens, ride your bikes, bake, explore nature, play games, role play, do some gardening, sing songs and make memories together! Let the children take the lead and explore different ways to develop their skills and learning through their play.

Sounds & Reading / RWI
Ruth Miskin is continuing to offer free phonics lessons via YouTube and from the 1st June (today), there will be a range of new daily films available. All films will be available from 9.30am and can be accessed for 24 hours.

Set 1, 2 and 3 Speed Sounds lessons will restart.
Set 2 and 3 Speed Sounds lessons will include new words for reading and spelling.

Some of the new films will include a focus on reading 'red words' which cover our high frequency words and there will also be new story and poetry sessions with Nick and Elly.

For further information, visit the site below:

https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/find-out-more/help-during-school-closure

If your child can confidently read all of set 1/2 sounds, continue to focus on building and blending simple words. Try mixing up your daily phonics activities. You could:
  • Join in with the last part of the RWI speed sound sessions, practising to read the green words.
  • Have a go at the new 'red word' sessions.
  • Read a book online to practise your blending (see further info below).
  • Have fun playing with sounds and building your own words. You could make up your own 'alien' (nonsense words) to practise reading too!

  • Twinkl have lots of great games and activities to practise blending. I have added some to our shared file on HWB.

If there are some sounds they still need to practise, then continue to follow the speed sound sessions which focus on that particular sound. They are starting from the beginning again today and will follow the order below, so you can choose the sessions you will need. For example, on Thursday, the set 1 session would be 'd' and set 2 session would be 'ow'.

This is a great game to help practise reading sounds:   Phonics Pop game

Reading books
Please continue to access the Oxford Reading Buddy  books online. There have been some issues accessing the books with the latest version of Safari. They are currently working on this and should hopefully be working again in the next week or so.

There are also a wide range of books available for free on oxfordowl.co.uk. Lots of the books link directly with RWI and can support your child at the correct stage in their reading development. Click the link below for further information:

There is also a range of letter formation sheets available for each set of sounds.

Task 1
This half term, we are going to look at the real life superheroes - People Who Help Us.
Talk to your family about all the different people who help us and what they do. How many can you think of? Can you create a mind map? (see examples below)

I have shared some flashcards and a puzzle on HWB to help you.

Task 2: Ordinal Numbers

Practise to identify and use ordinal numbers in your daily activities and play.

*      1st, 2nd, 3rd & last
**    1st - 10th
***  1st - 20th

Start with *, then build up to ** and *** (if able).

  • Use the 'people who help us' flashcards or some of your own toys and line them up. Who is first, second etc? Can you move them into the right place e.g put the firefighter third in the line, the police lady fifth etc. Write the numbers to match the correct position.
  • Help a grown up to unpack the shopping. What will you take out first?

  • Read a familiar story such as 'The Gruffalo', 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' or 'The Gingerbread Man' and talk about who/what came first, second etc?
  • Colour the vehicles correctly (see worksheet in shared files)

Task 3: Use Jit5 to create a picture

Login to HWB and open the 'paint' programme in jit5.
Choose your background, then click 'people'. Can you find the people who help us and create your own picture? Don't forget to save it when you have finished and I will be able to see it in your files.

Task 4: Create your own emergency vehicle
Think about the colours and features (doors, sirens, ladders etc). You could use:
  • Lego, duplo, buidling blocks or k'nex
  • Paint or collage
  • Old boxes, lids and tubes

Dough Disco
Some new moves to try in this one : )

Keeping Active
We have explored lots of different ways to keep fit and active and I’m sure you have your favourites. Continue to use these ideas but if you would like to try something new, this term we will look at some activities based around Gymnastics. Here is a short video for you to have a go at:

Daily Mindful Challenge
I hope you are enjoying our daily breathing challenges, try and use the tummy and the bumble breathing techniques every day. Keeping a healthy mind also involves listening to things around you. So this week can you hunt for these:

When you go outside into your garden, find somewhere comfortable to sit and practise your favourite breathing exercise. Closing your eyes will help you focus. What can you hear? Can you hear everything that is on list? Did you hear anything else?

Story/ Well-Being Challenge
This half term, I will be uploading a video each week to our shared class HWB folder. One week, there will be a short message from me where I will set you a challenge and the other week, I will share a story. Have a look in our shared files to find out the first challenge.

Cymraeg
This term we will be looking at shapes in Welsh.

Pa siap ydy hwn? What shape is this?

  • Can you find these shapes around your house? Practise to say the names in Welsh.
  • Describe the shape, can your family guess it?
  • Can you draw the shapes and write/match the correct words? Change your shape into a picture e.g. a 'cylch' could become 'haul' (a sun), a 'triongl could become a 'het' (party hat).

If you have any questions or need help with anything, please send me an email. I will be calling some more families again this Wednesday.

Have a lovely week.

Diolch
