Summer holidays are an important time to spend having fun with family. But if you find yourself bored at home on a rainy day, below are some things you could work on with your child in readiness for Year 1. Please note: this is not homework and we don’t expect you do to any of it. But we know lots of you are keen to work with your children at home.
Language
Practise reading the new yellow words attached to this letter.
Start to learn to spell the Reception high frequency words.
Practise letter formation and placing the letters on the line.
Read ‘real’ books together. Talk about the characters, the plot, the illustrations, what do they think will happen next? What do they think the characters are thinking/feeling? What do certain characters behave like they do?
Keep a diary. A few sentences recording something they have done each week. (Encourage them to sound out the words they need, but don’t tell them the spelling. At this age any spelling is not wrong as long as it is phonetically plausible or some middle sounds are missing eg was = woz, went =wet, to = tw. It is a developmental stage.) Each word should have a ‘finger space’ (a space the approximate size of their finger tip) and a full stop at the end of the piece of work to show they have finished.
Maths (pick out and practise at your child’s level, don’t worry about trying them all)
Doubling objects eg double 3 cubes.
Counting in 10s, 2s and 5s to 50.
Counting on in ones from a 10’s number eg “count on from 50”.
Reading teen numbers and tens numbers
Reading number sentences – naming + = eg 5+3= “five add three equals eight”.
Bonds to ten eg learn that 5+5, 7+3, 3+7 etc make 10.
Missing number addition sentences eg 5+___=10.
Introduce odd and even numbers to 10.
Trip notice
As part of our new theme ‘Through the Keyhole’, we will be visiting St Fagans to investigate different types of houses and looking for similarities and differences of houses over time. This trip will take place on Monday 9th September. On the first day back in September we will be sending a permission slip home for this trip and asking for a donation of £4 towards the cost.
Summer sort out
If you are having a sort out at home (or if you know anyone who is) and have any costumes of any style (ages 5-7), barbie style dolls and clothes, Barbie style house, pots and pans and kitchen utensils for role play, Lego characters or duplo characters, we would be very grateful for any donations.
