Here are some of the things we covered last week and below is an overview of this weeks work.

Planning their own learning for the topic/theme. 

Skills

Working collaboratively, using thinking skills- think, pair and share techniques. 

Linking meaningful learning experiences to their topic. 

Presenting and recording ideas, thoughts and feelings. 

Using mark making to make notes of their ideas through pictures and words. 

Correlation of sounds to letters. 

Independent Creative work- making Chinese Lanterns. 

Skills 

Following instructions, remembering sequence. 

Using and developing fine motor control- using a scissors correctly, folding, cutting, holding a writing tool correctly. 

Mark making- copying a model. 

Understanding symbols and their meanings. 

Developing independence, discussing what they have made and how they made it. Reflecting on what they would do differently for next time. 

Mathematical Development.

We have done quite a lot of practise with adding two sets of objects and becoming familiar with the addition symbol and what it represents. We also have been practising the skill of putting the largest number in your head and adding/counting on. 

Skills. 

Identifying the largest number/amount.

Counting the amount of objects correctly by touching and counting- 1 to 1 correspondence.

Mathematical Development

The story of The Chinese Zodiac/Years.

Ordinal Numbers-

Which animals came 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc?

What are ordinal numbers? what do they look like? How do you write them?

Activity: Listen to/view a powerpoint/video of the story of the Chinese New Year Zodiac and order the animals in their positions as they crossed the river. Match the animal with the position cards (both numerical and text- First 1st, second 2nd, third 3rd etc).

Language Development.

WRInc Groups- Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Handwriting formation family of letters- c, o, a, d, g, q

Writing in Chinese/Mandarin which year they were born in.

Knowledge and Understanding.

Cooking- making egg fried rice, recording the method in pictures/notes

Programming- use the BEE BOT app on the iPad and navigate their way around the programme putting the correct instructions and amount of movements needed.

Using 2publush + draw a picture using the mouse or ctouch board of their favourite animal in the Chinese Zodiac. Underneath type which animal it is and your own name. Save it and print. 

Where in the world is China? 

Identify where China is in relation to Wales, learn about the characteristics of the country.

Creative.

Listen to Chinese music and identify some instruments you can hear.

In groups make their own Chinese music.

Physical Development.

Directional movements- navigate their way around an grid learning left and right, forwards and back.

Personal and Social Development:

Discuss the actions of the animals in the story The Chinese Zodiac/Years and focus specifically on what happened to the cat. Identify and discuss the inappropriate/appropriate actions of the characters and how they would feel in that situation.

Home Learning.

Work based on Winter will be sent home on Monday to be returned  by the following Monday.

PLEASE READ EVERYDAY WITH YOUR CHILD AND GO OVER THE HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS TOO FOR 5 MINUTES. After the Christmas break some children are really struggling to remember how to read and build the words. 

My aim for this term is to have every child reading a book with words and I can only achieve this with your help.

Incidental counting- Please can you encourage your child to count everything. To touch the objects and count them up to 20 and beyond if they can.

Lots of children can count by rote (as if they've learnt a song) but few have remembered to count actual amounts correctly. This can be done for 5 minutes anywhere at anytime.

Our Trip this term is to a Chinese Restaurant, the date and cost will be confirmed. We don't need any parent helpers for this trip.
